Installation of Fire Dampers – Faster and Cheaper with the KTQ-O Damper

Montaż klap przeciwpożarowych — szybciej i taniej z klapą KTQ-O

Time – it is in short supply for designers, contractors, installers, and investors alike. Effective solutions that can optimize installation work are now worth their weight in gold. After all, no one likes construction delays. That’s why at SMAY, we have created the KTQ-O fire damper, which has a significantly shorter installation time compared to other dampers.

Easy Installation of Dampers Means Convenience and Time Savings

The reason for this shift is the rising cost of skilled workers, both globally and locally, who are essential for proper installation and subsequent operational maintenance. Therefore, a product with the shortest possible installation time is in demand. A low level of installation complexity is also desirable, as it reduces the required qualifications of the worker and minimizes the risk of installation errors. This has a direct impact on the fire safety of public buildings. Another highly attractive feature is versatility – at the design stage or during product selection, this minimizes the risk and consequences of potential mistakes.

KTQ-O Fire Dampers Designed for Quick Installation

Recognizing these needs, SMAY has developed and introduced the KTQ-O fire dampers, specifically designed for quick installation. A unique feature on the market is that the installation gap does not require any finishing work after inserting the damper, even if the installation opening is square. This is a crucial feature that allows for one-sided installation, significantly reducing the total installation time compared to our other products and similar dampers of the same type.

Installation Time Reduced by Up to 70%

These features of the KTQ-O damper result in an installation time reduction of 50-70% for each prepared opening. This significantly lowers the overall cost and labor associated with the entire ventilation system. Furthermore, a shorter installation time facilitates inter-trade coordination, simplifies project execution, and ensures the correct positioning of the damper in the wall – guaranteeing proper installation and declared fire resistance. KTQ-O dampers maintain a 2-hour fire resistance rating (EI120(ve i<->o)S) in all partition types from 100mm thickness without additional layers, flanges, or finishing, as confirmed by the CE certificate in compliance with PN EN 15650. This is a single-plane design with a large effective area, available in sizes ranging from Ø100mm to Ø315mm.

Comparison of KTQ-O and KTM-O Damper Installation

To highlight the unique features of the KTQ-O damper designed for quick installation, it is worth comparing its installation process with that of the standard KTM-O damper, which has already been manufactured in over 500,000 units. This model offers numerous advantages that have been appreciated by customers over the years, especially its versatility and the ability to be installed in tight spaces.

Different Wall Types – Different Openings for Fire Damper Installation

Construction projects feature various standard wall types, classified as rigid (typically reinforced concrete or masonry) and flexible (usually made of gypsum board on a steel profile structure). Depending on the wall type, different techniques are used to create openings for service penetrations, affecting their shape and dimensions. When installing a fire damper, the opening’s dimensions and final shape must comply with the Technical Documentation of the chosen damper. Before installation, it is essential to thoroughly review the technical and operational documentation (DTR) of the specific fire damper model.

Installation of Fire Dampers with Actuators – Step by Step

For demonstration purposes, the most common installation method has been selected: installing dampers with an actuator in a suspended ventilation system passing through a 140mm-thick reinforced concrete wall with EI120 fire resistance. The table below details the step-by-step operations required for the installation of each damper type, along with materials, tools, and additional notes.

What distinguishes the KTQ-O damper from other fire dampers?

The differences between the KTQ-O and KTM-O dampers are mainly in the installation time, the number of tools used, and the materials required. In the described case, the installation time for the KTQ-O damper is around 20 minutes, after which the damper is ready for operation. The installation time for the KTM flap is about 45 minutes, plus the drying time for the masonry mortar.

The KTQ-O damper can be installed without the need for processing or access to the other side of the wall

The damper is ready for operation after at least 2 days, provided that the gap did not require repair, which could extend this period. Moreover, at no stage of the installation of the KTQ-O damper was there a need for access to the other side of the wall, which allows, for example, the installation of the damper in shaft walls or with installations directly on the other side of the building partition.

In construction projects, there are situations where proper processing of KTM-O dampers is impossible or very difficult. In such cases, using the KTQ-O damper, designed for quick installation, is the perfect solution. However, due to the advantages mentioned above, the share of KTQ-O dampers in the total number of round dampers used in construction projects will increase, gradually replacing the traditionally installed dampers, even in typical cases.
